Illegal dog training aids

A dog must have a balanced character and be well socialized. It must also not be aggressive towards humans or other animals and must not endanger them. In this context the question often arises as to what type of aids are permissible for breeding and training purposes, especially because certain devices are legally sold while their use is prohibited in Switzerland.

The Swiss animal welfare legislation clearly prohibits, among other things, to mishandle, neglect or unnecessarily overwork a dog. The Animal Welfare Ordinance also contains special provisions that regulate the use of aids for dog training. The use of these aids must not cause injury or significant pain to a dog, nor must it cause severe irritation or anxiety. If behavioral corrections are necessary, they must always be adapted to the situation and be directly related to the misbehavior. Dog owners must train their animals in compliance with these principles. The more sustainable method of “force-free dog training” is highly recommended. Further information on this and the resulting initiative can be found here.

It is prohibited to use aversive dog training devices that give an electric shock, emit unpleasant sounds for the animal or dispense chemical substances.

It is also not allowed to usebark deterrents that emit a  scent, or  work via remote water sprays or compressed air when the dog makes a sound. It does not matter whether the collar reacts automatically or is triggered manually. Spraying water from a bottle – practice that is unfortunately still quite common – to prevent vocalizations or expressions of pain is therefore also prohibited. Furthermore, it is illegal to fire punishment shots, use no pull collars and so-called no-pull “Haltis”, spiked collars, lumbar belts and other leading aids with spikes on the inside (pinch collars).

The bans apply regardless of whether prohibited aids are offered in specialized stores or not. If a dog is required to wear a muzzle, it must be fit the dog comfortably allow the animal to breathe normally. It is also never allowed to use excessive force when training dogs.
